Aromatherapy, or essential oil therapy, refers to a range of traditional, alternative or complementary therapies that use essential oils and other aromatic plant compounds.

Essential oils have been used for nearly 6,000 years, with the aim of improving a person’s health or mood.

Aromatherapy is normally used through inhalation or as a topical application.

Inhalation: the oils evaporate into the air using a diffuser container, spray, or oil droplets, or breathed in, for example, in a steam bath.

Apart from providing a pleasant smell, aromatherapy oils can provide respiratory disinfection, decongestant, and psychological benefits.

Inhaling essential oils stimulates the olfactory system, the part of the brain connected to smell, including the nose and the brain.

Molecules that enter the nose or mouth pass to the lungs, and from there, to other parts of the body.

As the molecules reach the brain, they affect the limbic system, which is linked to the emotions, the heart rate, blood pressure, breathing, memory, stress, and hormone balance. In this way, essential oils can have a subtle, yet holistic effect on the body.

Topical applications: massage oils, and bath and skincare products are absorbed through the skin. Massaging the area where the oil is to be applied can boost circulation and increase absorption. Some argue that areas that are richer in sweat glands and hair follicles, such as the head or the palms of the hand, may absorb the oils more effectively.

Essential oils are never applied directly to the skin. They must always be diluted with a carrier oil. Usually, a few drops of essential oil to an ounce of carrier oil is the concentration. Most common carrier oils are sweet almond oil or olive oil.

An ancient art

Reflexology is an ancient healing protocol, said to have originated in Egypt around 233oBC. Championed by the Chinese around 1,000BC, it was then brought to Europe by Marco polo in the 1300’s. By the time an American Dr William Fitzgerald wrote about reflexology in 1917, he was the recognised “father of reflexology”. Riley, Ingham and Nogier are credited with refining the processes that are used today.

What reflexology feels like

Experiences with reflexology sessions vary from a general feeling of relaxation, to a sense of “lightness” or tingling in the body, as well as feelings of warmth, a sense of “opening,” or “energy moving” from the practitioner’s pressure to the specific body area or organ. There is often a physical perception of energy flowing through every organ, valve, gland, or muscle, as well as a sense of communication between each body system.

How it works

One of the theories of reflexology is that the body will nurture and repair itself once released from stress. If the body is extremely stressed, the reflexologist may refer you to a medical team or another treatment, if appropriate, but at no time will he or she give medical advice or diagnosis.

PLEASE NOTE:

Our reflexologist will inform you that reflexology does not treat specific illnesses and is not a substitute for medical treatment. Reflexologists do not diagnose or tell you about any congestion or tension they observe on the foot, hand, or ear during a session that may suggest abnormalities.

So simple and so powerful

We encourage all our clients to utilise this natural method of healing through juices. It’s what nature intended. Discover the healing power of some exotic blends we recommend.

HEALTH BENEFITS OF JUICING
The Mayo Clinic advises that juices deliver more nutrients than eating whole fruits and vegetables and it gives your digestive system a rest from working on fibre. They say that juicing can reduce your risk of cancer, boost your immune system, help remove toxins from your body, aid digestion and help you lose weight.

BEST FRUITS AND VEGETABLES FOR JUICING
Some of the most popular vegetables are carrots, cucumber, celery, kale, spinach, beets, and romaine. The most popular fruits to use in juicing are lemons, oranges, apples, and limes. Other add-ins are fresh ginger, parsley, chlorella, and turmeric.

Kale – insanely low in calories, powerful anti-oxidant with anti-inflammatory properties, and helpful for arthritis and autoimmune diseases

Spinach – the beauty of spinach lies in how easy it is to disguise the taste. It’s mild tasting yet packed with vitamins, has anti-cancerous properties, and is one of the healthiest foods on the planet

Cucumber – since it’s 95% water, it’s an incredible detoxifier and helps with liver and kidney function

Lemon – one of the most important items to stock in your kitchen as it’s a highly effective cleansing agent and cuts through the bitterness of greens

Carrots – known for being a good source of beta-carotene, fiber, vitamin K, and potassium. Carrots have been linked to lower cholesterol levels and improved eye health

Celery – low in calorie since it is mostly water. It is a low-glycemic food and a good source of dietary fiber, Vitamin A, Vitamin C, and Vitamin K.

Beetroot – contain nutrients that may help lower your blood pressure, fight inflammation, and support detoxification.

Apples – “an apple a day keeps the doctor away” is a famous saying for good reason. Helps to fight inflammation and heart health.

Oranges – immune system booster since it is high in Vitamin C and low in calories.

Turmeric – anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant properties

Ginger – aids in digestion and supports the immune system

POWERFUL JUICE COMBOS TO TRY
Drink Your Greens: Spinach, Cucumber, Celery, Lemon, Ginger, and Apple (optional: parsley)

The Detoxifier: Beetroot, Carrots, Lemon, Ginger, Apple

The Vision: Carrots, Oranges, Ginger (optional: turmeric)
